The three main blocks; up, middle, and down, form the basic blocking system that is derived from the Lohan Shaolin Wushu style and establish the fundamental aspect of defense against various attacks by extending the arms and protecting the body within the area known as the six gates. The six gates theory will be covered in a subsequent lesson.
The blocks are essentially Low, middle, and high and will serve to block, deflect, redirect, and suppress strikes from a variety of directions and serve as foundation for defending also against various grappling, kicking, throwing, take-downs, and weapons attack.
The practitioner must keep in mind that without a strong root and foundation, merely learning self-defense tricks or sport fighting tactics will often result in a person’s defense disintegrating in the face of violent pressure and not be sufficient to protect. This is the truth of life and death and should not be regarded lightly. A jab or punch (with unprotected fist) if you are not substantially larger and stronger will do little or nothing against someone burning with determination, who is devoid of concern over pain or consequence and intent on causing you great harm. the truth is not found in regulated sports but in life. Only true technique and skill overcomes the genetics of bigger, faster, stronger.
The practice of the down block as with the middle and high blocks start with a chambered position. This chambered position is unlike the former in that it comprises a folding of the arms together and drawing the rear fist close to the opposite shoulder with forearm somewhat parallel with the extended arm which is forward and slightly downward in direction. c.f. the elbows should encroach with the one elbow resting in front of the solar plexus and away approximately the span of a hand width interposing. The forward and downward fist should orientate in a frontal aspect with the chamber having the ability to adjust and in variance even float upward or strike out by means of extending as if to touch the adversary and the upper chambered elbow can lift and extend almost as if to touch the chin or nose of your opposite party so that a lunging step forward can result in strikes with both fist and elbow if so desired.
The 8 (body) methods are the foundation of movement and the template of the shape to be taken at all times so in chamber and block, open and close, withdraw and extension the body methods should be resolved within and without contradiction, congruent throughout. Chamber precisely, quickly and strike out with the idea of breaking through, lifting, supporting, suppressing, throwing, releasing. This must be considered carefully. Start slowly and with clear intention and view toward the ideal technique. Adequate time and effort should be allotted to the development of these fundamentals. 10 years is not enough time to realize all the wonders.
